Start by choosing whether you are a Yonkers resident or a nonresident who performs work in Yonkers. The two situations use different local withholding methods.

Important: Yonkers does not use one flat local paycheck rate for everyone. Resident withholding and nonresident earnings-tax withholding are calculated differently. This tool estimates payroll withholding; it does not determine your legal residency or prepare Form Y-203.

Yonkers resident vs nonresident: the quick difference

Your situationHow the Yonkers paycheck component is generally estimated
Yonkers residentYonkers resident withholding is calculated as 16.75% of the New York State withholding-calculation amount under the 2026 Yonkers method.
Not a Yonkers resident, but you work in YonkersYonkers nonresident earnings-tax withholding applies to Yonkers-source wages, using a 0.50% rate after the applicable regular-pay exclusion method.
Nonresident who works only partly in YonkersOnly the portion attributable to services performed in Yonkers should feed the Yonkers nonresident calculation.
Neither a resident nor performing services in YonkersYonkers withholding generally should not be the local component of that paycheck.

This distinction is why a website that simply applies 1%, 1.61% or 1.96% of gross wages to everyone can give a misleading Yonkers estimate.

How to use the Yonkers paycheck calculator

  1. Enter your earnings. Use annual salary or per-paycheck gross pay, or switch to hourly inputs where available in the shared calculator.
  2. Choose your pay frequency. Weekly, biweekly, semimonthly, monthly or annual.
  3. Enter your federal filing/W-4 information.
  4. Enter your New York IT-2104 withholding status and allowances.
  5. Choose your Yonkers status.
  • Yonkers resident
  • Works in Yonkers, nonresident
  1. If you are a nonresident, enter the percentage of this paycheck attributable to services performed in Yonkers.
  2. Add applicable deductions/YTD amounts such as 401(k), HSA/FSA, Social Security wages and Paid Family Leave contributions.
  3. Calculate and review federal, New York State and Yonkers amounts separately.

If your main question is how to set New York allowances rather than calculate the full paycheck, use the New York withholding calculator.

How is Yonkers resident withholding calculated in 2026?

A common misconception is:

“Yonkers takes 16.75% of my salary.”

That is not how the resident payroll method works.

Under New York’s 2026 Yonkers withholding publication, the employer first calculates the underlying New York State-style withholding amount using the applicable wage, filing status, deduction and allowance rules.

The result is then multiplied by:

16.75% (0.1675)

For example, if the New York State withholding-calculation amount for a paycheck is $140:

$140 × 16.75% = $23.45

That is the approximate Yonkers resident withholding component.

The exact amount can differ by a few cents depending on whether payroll uses the published wage-bracket tables or an approved exact method.

Residents are subject even if they work outside Yonkers

New York’s withholding requirements specifically say employers withhold Yonkers tax for Yonkers residents even when their services are performed outside Yonkers.

So for resident withholding, the central fact is residency, not merely whether your office is physically inside the city.

Official resident example

New York’s 2026 NYS-50-T-Y publication gives a Method II example for:

  • weekly payroll;
  • $400 gross wages;
  • Single;
  • 3 withholding allowances.

The publication calculates a New York State-style base withholding amount of $8.01 and then:

$8.01 × 16.75% = $1.34

So the official Yonkers resident withholding in that example is:

$1.34 for the weekly paycheck

Our annualized engine produces approximately $7.99 for the underlying NYS component because of per-period rounding, and the Yonkers result rounds to approximately $1.34.

How does Yonkers nonresident withholding work?

A nonresident who performs services in Yonkers is not calculated the same way as a resident.

New York imposes a Yonkers nonresident earnings tax on Yonkers-source earnings.

The headline rate is:

0.50%

But for ordinary paycheck withholding, the 2026 publication provides wage-bracket, exact and annualized methods. The annualized Method VIII includes an exclusion before applying the 0.5% rate.

That means a correct regular-pay estimate is not always:

gross paycheck × 0.5%

2026 Yonkers nonresident annualized exclusion

Under Method VIII, payroll annualizes the wages attributable to Yonkers and applies this schedule:

Annualized Yonkers-source wagesAnnual exclusion before 0.5% withholding
Less than $4,000No regular withholding under Method VIII
$4,000 through $10,000$3,000
Over $10,000 through $20,000$2,000
Over $20,000 through $30,000$1,000
Over $30,000$0

After the exclusion:

  1. multiply the remaining annualized amount by 0.005;
  2. divide by the number of payroll periods.

The calculator applies this 2026 Method VIII structure to the Yonkers-source share you enter.

Official nonresident examples

The New York publication provides useful examples that show why a flat 0.5% shortcut can be wrong at lower wages.

Example 1: $75 per week

Annualized:

$75 × 52 = $3,900

Because annualized Yonkers wages are below $4,000:

Yonkers withholding = $0

Example 2: $200 per week

Annualized:

$200 × 52 = $10,400

Applicable exclusion:

$2,000

Taxable annualized amount:

$10,400 − $2,000 = $8,400

Tax:

$8,400 × 0.5% = $42

Per week:

$42 ÷ 52 = $0.81

The calculator produces approximately:

$0.81

Example 3: $400 semimonthly

Annualized:

$400 × 24 = $9,600

Applicable exclusion:

$3,000

Taxable annualized amount:

$9,600 − $3,000 = $6,600

Tax:

$6,600 × 0.5% = $33

Per semimonthly paycheck:

$33 ÷ 24 = $1.38

The calculator produces:

$1.38

What if only part of my work is performed in Yonkers?

This is one of the most important differences between a useful nonresident calculator and a generic “0.5% local tax” calculator.

New York says Yonkers nonresidents are subject on wages paid for services performed in Yonkers.

If your work is split between Yonkers and other locations, the Yonkers-source portion can require allocation.

That is why the calculator asks:

Work performed in Yonkers (%)

Example

Suppose your biweekly gross paycheck is:

$2,000

and, under your employer’s records/allocation method, 50% of the wages are attributable to services performed in Yonkers.

Yonkers-source wages for the paycheck:

$2,000 × 50% = $1,000

Annualized over 26 biweekly periods:

$1,000 × 26 = $26,000

Method VIII exclusion for this annualized range:

$1,000

Taxable annualized Yonkers earnings:

$26,000 − $1,000 = $25,000

Tax:

$25,000 × 0.5% = $125

Per paycheck:

$125 ÷ 26 = $4.81

So the estimated Yonkers nonresident withholding is:

$4.81, not $10.

The actual allocation should be supported by your work facts and employer records. The calculator does not decide which workdays legally count as Yonkers services.

What is Form IT-2104.1?

New York uses Form IT-2104.1 — New York State, City of New York, and City of Yonkers Certificate of Nonresidence and Allocation of Withholding Tax for employees who claim they are not residents of the relevant jurisdiction and need wages allocated.

New York’s withholding guidance says employees claiming nonresidence should certify that status and estimate the percentage of wages/compensation attributable to services in the jurisdiction.

For Yonkers, that is especially relevant when you:

  • do not live in Yonkers;
  • perform some work in Yonkers;
  • perform some work elsewhere.

The percentage input in this calculator is a planning input. Your employer’s actual payroll allocation and the official form control the real withholding.

You can find IT-2104.1 on the New York withholding forms page.

How do I know if I am a Yonkers resident?

The calculator cannot make a legal residency determination.

New York’s Tax Department explains that Yonkers residency depends on rules such as domicile and maintaining a permanent place of abode.

In general:

  • if your domicile is in Yonkers, you are considered a Yonkers resident;
  • maintaining a permanent place of abode in Yonkers and spending 184 days or more there can also create Yonkers resident status under the state’s residency rules.

Residency can be fact-specific. If your status is uncertain because you moved, have multiple homes or split time between locations, use the official guidance or professional advice rather than choosing the calculator option solely by mailing address.

Worked paycheck example: $3,000 biweekly for a Yonkers resident

Here is a simplified example generated from the same 2026 engine used on the page.

Assumptions:

  • gross pay: $3,000 biweekly;
  • Single;
  • modern Form W-4 with no additional adjustments;
  • 0 New York IT-2104 allowances;
  • Yonkers resident;
  • no 401(k), HSA/FSA or post-tax deduction;
  • below Social Security/Additional Medicare thresholds;
  • NY Paid Family Leave included and its annual cap not yet reached;
  • optional disability contribution not included.

Estimated per paycheck:

ItemEstimated amount
Gross pay$3,000.00
Federal income-tax withholding−$320.38
New York State withholding−$140.30
Yonkers resident withholding−$23.50
Social Security−$186.00
Medicare−$43.50
NY Paid Family Leave−$12.96
Estimated take-home pay$2,273.36

The Yonkers line is:

$140.30 × 16.75% ≈ $23.50

This example is a payroll estimate, not a tax-return result.

Resident vs nonresident comparison on the same gross paycheck

Consider the same $3,000 biweekly gross pay and isolate only the Yonkers local component.

Under the calculator’s 2026 assumptions:

  • Yonkers resident: about $23.50, because it is tied to the modeled NY State withholding amount.
  • Yonkers nonresident, 100% of the paycheck attributable to Yonkers work: about $15.00 once annualized Yonkers-source wages exceed the exclusion range.
  • Yonkers nonresident, 50% attributable to Yonkers work: about $7.50 in this higher annualized source-wage example.

These are not interchangeable “rates.” They represent different tax systems.

Can a Yonkers nonresident also owe tax where they live?

Yes, potentially.

The Yonkers nonresident calculation answers only the Yonkers local earnings-tax part.

Your full tax situation can also involve:

  • New York State tax on New York-source income;
  • the tax rules of your state/locality of residence;
  • credits for taxes paid to another jurisdiction where applicable;
  • NYC resident tax if you are an NYC resident;
  • other special sourcing/residency rules.

The dedicated Yonkers calculator does not model another state’s income tax or simultaneous NYC resident withholding in the Yonkers result.

If you live in NYC but work in Yonkers, for example, the Yonkers nonresident component and NYC resident tax are separate issues. Use the NYC paycheck calculator for the NYC resident side and verify the combined situation with your payroll records or a tax professional if material.

Does a Yonkers resident pay the surcharge when working outside Yonkers?

For withholding purposes, yes.

New York specifically lists Yonkers residents even when services are performed outside Yonkers among employees for whom Yonkers tax is withheld.

This is different from the nonresident rule, which is connected to wages for services performed in Yonkers.

Why does my paystub not match a simple 1.96% Yonkers calculator?

Because 1.96% is not the regular resident paycheck method.

The official 2026 resident withholding method calculates a New York State-style amount and applies the 16.75% resident surcharge.

A flat 1.96% number is more closely associated with the 2026 supplemental-wage percentage rate for a Yonkers resident (1.95975%), used for certain bonuses/commissions when the supplemental percentage method is permitted.

That bonus rate should not be applied to every regular salary paycheck.

For bonuses, use the New York bonus tax calculator.

Why do some Yonkers calculators show about 1%?

Some tools convert the resident surcharge into a rough effective percentage of wages for a typical income.

That can be useful as a quick illustration, but it is not the official paycheck formula.

The resident local amount changes with the underlying New York State withholding calculation, which depends on:

  • pay;
  • filing/withholding status;
  • IT-2104 allowances;
  • deductions;
  • additional withholding;
  • payroll period.

This calculator uses the actual shared New York withholding engine and then applies the Yonkers resident percentage to that result.

How do IT-2104 allowances affect a Yonkers resident paycheck?

The resident surcharge is connected to the New York State withholding calculation.

So changing the New York IT-2104 allowances can change:

  1. the New York State withholding amount;
  2. the Yonkers resident withholding derived from that amount.

The 2026 IT-2104 line 1 is used for New York State/Yonkers allowance purposes.

If you need help calculating allowances or extra withholding rather than the entire paycheck, use the New York withholding calculator.

What about New York Paid Family Leave and disability?

These are New York payroll deductions/programs, not Yonkers income tax.

For 2026, the employee Paid Family Leave contribution is 0.432% of gross wages per pay period, capped at $411.91 for the year.

The calculator can include PFL and accepts year-to-date PFL contributions so it can stop at the modeled annual cap.

New York disability-benefits contributions can also appear depending on employer/coverage arrangements. They are kept separate from the Yonkers local line.

For a full explanation of paycheck lines, see New York paycheck taxes and deductions.

Yonkers withholding vs final annual tax

The amount withheld from your paycheck is a payment toward tax, not necessarily your final annual Yonkers liability.

For residents, the final return calculation can take account of state tax and specified credits/adjustments.

For nonresidents, Form Y-203 calculates the annual Yonkers nonresident earnings tax and can involve return-level allocation/limitations.

This calculator uses the 2026 payroll withholding methods because the primary user task is “What might come out of my paycheck?”

For broader annual New York tax planning, use the New York income tax calculator.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Yonkers income tax rate in 2026?

There is no single regular-pay rate that accurately describes both residents and nonresidents.

For paycheck withholding:

  • residents use a surcharge equal to 16.75% of the New York State withholding-calculation amount;
  • nonresidents face a 0.50% earnings-tax rate on Yonkers-source wages after the applicable regular-pay withholding exclusion method.

For separately identified supplemental wages, different percentage-method rates can apply.

Is Yonkers resident tax 16.75% of my salary?

No.

For resident paycheck withholding, 16.75% is applied to the underlying New York State withholding-calculation amount, not directly to gross salary.

I live outside Yonkers but work there. Do I pay Yonkers tax?

A Yonkers nonresident can be subject to the nonresident earnings tax on wages attributable to services performed in Yonkers.

Your exact withholding can depend on how much of your work is Yonkers-source and the applicable payroll method.

I work from home outside Yonkers some days. Should I enter less than 100%?

Only if that percentage reflects the wage allocation that applies to your actual work facts/employer records.

The calculator does not determine sourcing rules. Use Form IT-2104.1 and your employer’s payroll guidance when allocation is required.

What if my annualized Yonkers wages are under $4,000?

Under the 2026 Method VIII annualized regular-pay method, annualized Yonkers-source wages below $4,000 produce no regular Yonkers nonresident withholding under that method.

Other facts or final return requirements can still matter.

What if I move into or out of Yonkers during the year?

A residency change can change the applicable local tax treatment. New York’s IT-2104 instructions specifically identify moving into or out of Yonkers as a reason to review/update your withholding certificate.

Part-year annual return calculations can require additional forms; this paycheck calculator does not prepare them.

Can I use the nonresident 0.5% rate for a resident bonus?

No.

The 0.50% rate is the Yonkers nonresident earnings-tax percentage.

A qualifying separately identified resident supplemental wage uses the published 1.95975% Yonkers resident supplemental withholding rate when the percentage method is used.

Use the New York bonus tax calculator for bonus calculations.

Why does my employer’s result differ by a few cents?

Employers can use approved wage-bracket or exact methods and payroll systems apply per-period rounding.

The shared engine uses annualized exact schedules for many calculations, so small cent-level differences from a published payroll table can occur.

Does the Yonkers calculator include another state’s tax?

No.

The tool is designed around federal, New York State and Yonkers payroll components. If you live in another state, your home-state tax/credit rules are outside this calculator.
