About New York Paycheck Calculator
New York Paycheck Calculator is an independent informational calculator project built to help New York workers understand how gross pay becomes take-home pay.
Our focus is deliberately narrow: make New York paycheck, withholding and related tax calculations easier to understand without forcing users to decode payroll tables or search through several government publications for a basic estimate.
The calculators are free to use for planning and education. They are not payroll software, tax-return preparation tools or a substitute for professional tax, payroll, legal or financial advice.
About the author
Content on New York Paycheck Calculator is authored by Muzammal Amin, a PhD researcher in Physics at the University of Turin (Università di Torino), Italy, with a research background involving mathematical modelling and quantitative analysis.
His academic background is relevant to the project’s emphasis on transparent formulas, modelling assumptions, reproducible calculations and careful source checking. It should not be interpreted as a tax, accounting, payroll or legal credential. New York tax and payroll claims on this site are therefore verified against current official sources rather than relying on the author’s academic title.

Why this site exists
A paycheck can look simple until deductions begin. A New York employee may need to understand federal income-tax withholding, Social Security and Medicare, New York State withholding, NYC resident withholding, Yonkers resident/nonresident withholding, Form W-4, Form IT-2104, Paid Family Leave, disability contributions, retirement/benefit deductions, hourly/overtime pay and bonus withholding. The information exists, but it is spread across different federal and New York publications. This project brings those components into one focused set of calculators and guides so a worker can answer a practical question:
What is happening between my gross pay and the amount that reaches my paycheck?
Who the site is for
New York Paycheck Calculator is primarily designed for employees and workers who want to estimate or understand their own pay: estimating a new salary’s take-home pay, comparing pay frequencies, calculating hourly earnings/overtime, understanding NY State/NYC/Yonkers withholding, seeing what a bonus looks like after withholding, understanding PFL/DBL deductions, or comparing salary examples before negotiating compensation. The project is employee-first — it is not an employer payroll administration system and does not attempt to cover every employer payroll tax, filing or compliance obligation.
What you can calculate
Supporting guides explain the numbers behind those tools:
One calculation engine, different workflows
The main calculator pages use a shared calculation engine for federal withholding, Social Security/Medicare, NY State withholding, NYC, Yonkers, PFL and selected deductions. Each page changes the workflow and defaults to match the user’s task — the hourly page starts with rate and hours, the NYC page starts with NYC resident treatment, the bonus page uses supplemental-wage methods, the withholding page focuses on IT-2104, and the Yonkers page handles resident/nonresident local logic. For formulas, sources, rounding and testing, see How the New York Paycheck Calculator Works.
Where our tax information comes from
For changing tax and payroll facts, we prefer official primary sources: IRS, Social Security Administration, New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, New York Workers’ Compensation Board, New York Paid Family Leave, and current federal/New York forms, tables, publications and instructions. Third-party calculators are useful for comparing user experience and identifying questions, but are not treated as the authority for a tax rate simply because they rank in search results. Our Editorial Policy explains the research and fact-checking process in more detail.
Why we show assumptions and limitations
Paycheck calculators can disagree even when both appear reasonable — differences can come from tax year, filing status, W-4 settings, IT-2104 allowances, pay frequency, NYC/Yonkers status, YTD Social Security/Medicare wages, bonus method, pre-tax benefit treatment, payroll rounding, or deductions a simple calculator does not know about. We would rather explain those assumptions than present one number as guaranteed. The result you receive is an estimate based on the information you enter and the rules modeled by the calculator.
What the calculators do not know
A web calculator cannot automatically know every fact in your payroll or tax situation — whether your employer applies a special benefit plan, all YTD payroll details unless entered, special tax treatment for a compensation item, your legal residency in a complex case, income from another job, every federal/New York credit, nonresident/part-year allocation rules, payroll corrections/imputed income, or employer-specific withholding methods. Results should be compared with your actual payroll records and official forms when accuracy is financially important.
New York-specific rather than nationwide
This project is intentionally different from generic nationwide templates. The site is built around New York-specific details: IT-2104 allowances, NYC resident withholding, Yonkers resident/nonresident withholding, New York Paid Family Leave, New York disability-benefit contribution context, and current New York State withholding/annual tax methods. The goal is depth within the New York paycheck problem rather than becoming a broad personal-finance website.
We are not a government website
New York Paycheck Calculator is not affiliated with, endorsed by or operated by the Internal Revenue Service, Social Security Administration, New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, New York City, City of Yonkers, New York Workers’ Compensation Board, or any other government agency. Links to government sources are provided because those agencies publish the rules and data used to verify calculations.
Academic authorship is not a tax credential
The site has a named author, but an academic research background is not the same as professional tax, accounting, payroll or legal qualification. Unless a page explicitly identifies a real reviewer and their verifiable role, you should not assume that the page was independently reviewed by a CPA, attorney, enrolled agent or payroll professional. We do not intend to create credibility by inventing tax experts or reviewers, professional credentials, awards, user counts, testimonials or partnerships. Trust should come from transparent sources, reproducible calculations, clear limitations, named authorship and a correction process.
Editorial independence and monetization
The site may be supported through methods such as display advertising and, in the future, carefully selected affiliate relationships. Commercial relationships do not determine tax rates, calculator formulas, calculator defaults, official sources used, whether an error is corrected, or editorial conclusions. Sponsored or affiliate content should be disclosed when applicable. Our Editorial Policy contains the full independence standard.
Privacy and calculator inputs
The calculators are designed to work without asking you to create an account or provide sensitive identifiers such as a Social Security number or bank account. The current calculation engine is designed to perform its calculator math in the browser. Sitewide analytics, advertising, cookies and other data practices — if used — are separate from the calculation logic and should be described in the Privacy Policy. Do not enter unnecessary sensitive personal information into a calculator or contact message.
Keeping the calculators current
Tax and payroll rules change. The site uses evergreen calculator URLs but updates the visible tax year and underlying data when current official rules change. Our review process includes checking IRS withholding schedules, federal annual brackets/deductions, the Social Security wage base, New York withholding publications, IT-2104, NYC/Yonkers methods, New York annual tax schedules, and PFL contribution rates/caps. The current source registry and last-verified information are published on the Methodology page.
If you find a problem
A transparent calculator should be challengeable. If a result looks wrong, please use the Contact page and tell us which calculator you used, the tax year, the assumptions/inputs that matter, the result you received, what you expected, and an official source or payroll comparison if you have one. Do not send your Social Security number, bank details, passwords or an unredacted tax return/pay stub. Verified errors are corrected under our Editorial Policy.
What this site is—and is not
New York Paycheck Calculator is: a focused New York paycheck-calculation project; an educational planning resource; a collection of calculators and supporting guides; designed around official-source verification and transparent assumptions.
It is not: an IRS or New York government service; an employer payroll platform; tax-return preparation software; a substitute for a CPA, attorney or payroll professional; a guarantee of your exact paycheck, refund or tax liability.
If you understand that boundary, the site can be useful for what it is designed to do: make New York take-home pay easier to estimate and understand.
